Oct. 3: Nickelback holds on for second straight week

A week remarkable for its stability

By Frank Moldstad

New blood: Kelly Clarkson pops up
Nickelback's "Photograph" holds on to the Number 1 spot on our Overall Top 5 singles chart for second straight week, with Kanye West again lurking just below as a strong Number 2 with his "Gold Digger." In fact, the week was remarkable for its stability -- there was very little change from the week before on the Overall Top 5 chart, except that Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends ... " switched places with Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin Down," in the Number 4 and 5 spots. The Black Eyed Peas hold steady at Number 3 with "My Humps."

Several new tunes are popping up on the Top 5 Downloads by Site chart, however, including "Behind These Hazel Eyes" by Kelly Clarkson and "Push the Button" by Sugababes., both on the Napster chart. Expect to see these tunes gain strength over the next week.

The Overall Top 5 Singles chart is compiled from the weekly top singles downloads charts published on iTunes, Connect, Buy.com, Wal-Mart and Napster. The raw data from these sites is poured into our Top Downloads by Site chart below, and the Top 5 are drawn from it based on rank and frequency of appearance. (For the sake of comparison, we also include the week's Top 5 album downloads on emusic.com, which does not publish a singles chart).

Although the Top 5 chart is based on data reported by some of the market's biggest download sites, its rankings do not include data from several other significant sites. However, it's extremely unlikely that a hot tune would not reach the top five singles among the sites we survey, and we believe that our Top 5 chart represents a reasonably accurate picture of total download trends.
