Tablet Growth Now Expected To Be Flat In North America And Europe This Year

according to IDC, tablet growth in the North American and European markets will be flat this year. The tablet market, which IDC counts as tablets and 2-in-1 devices, will grow by a slim 6.5 percent globally. Tablet sales won’t catch PC sales for a lenghtyperiod of time. Another point of context: Quarterly smartphone sales are substantially larger than yearly tablet sales, a gap that is increasing. And as only smartphones of the group are growing quickly, we shouldn’t expect the internal ranking order to change much.

Facebook is testing an expansion of its search product, introduced last year as “Graph Search,” on mobile devices, according to a report from Bloomberg. The change, which is currently only visible to a smaller subset of Facebook users, allows users to retrieve friends’ old posts via keyword, as well as content from pages they followed. This feature was previously introduced to desktop users a year ago, but without mobile support.

Sources with knowledge of the matter said SoftBank Corporation is to offer Sony Corporation smartphones for the first time, selling the upcoming Xperia handset both in Japan and through subsidiary Sprint Corporation in the United States. Four sources told Reuters that Sony's Xperia Z3, its next flagship smartphone expected to be unveiled at next week's IFA tech expo in Berlin, will be available in time for the winter holiday season in both countries.

Japan's SoftBank and its U.S. mobile carrier Sprint will offer a Sony smartphone for the first time, sources with knowledge of the matter said, as the two technology titans confront daunting challenges in the U.S. market. The deal could give a much-needed boost to Sony's struggling mobile division, which last month said it no longer expected to make a profit in the year to next March. SoftBank, Japan's second most valuable company, is pushing price cuts and promotions at Sprint while unveiling joint smartphone offerings to shore up the No. 3 U.S. carrier, after U.S. regulators thwarted its hopes for a merger to give it the scale to take on bigger rivals.
