The buzziest feature of the new iPads may have nothing to do with how thin it is or the resolution of the screen. With minimal trumpeting, Apple revealed in its promotional material that it will ship the devices with a built-in cellular SIM card that will allow users to buy wireless service la carte, on the spot. ATT, Sprint and T-Mobile have signed up to take part.

How People In Hong Kong Can Communicate If Cell Networks Go Down

Many protesters in Hong Kong who suspect authorities may shut down some cell networks in the city have begun chatting on an app that doesn't require a central network connection. The app, however, has some potential pitfalls and demonstrators have a few other options at their disposal, especially if they have Android phones. At least 100,000 people in Hong Kong have reportedly downloaded FireChat in the last 24 hours. The service allows users to talk anonymously in chat rooms with groups of people nearby, and the connection works on Android and iOS via a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection.

Google showed us the way with Chromecast , but now everyone wants to build a video streamer out of a dongle. The latest entrant in this market is Microsoft , which revealed its Display Adapter as the latest way to get the videos and presentations from your PC onto the nearest TV. That means it's entirely dependent on your PC — it's not taking ownership of the stream like Chromecast does — but it's also dirt-simple, and doesn't need its own Wi-Fi connection.

Verizon Will Be Getting IPhone 6-Friendly WiFi Calling In 2015

A quick update for those trying to figure out which carriers will/won’t support the iPhone 6’s WiFi calling feature any time soon: T-Mobile is a go. AT&T will get it in 2015. Now Verizon is pledging to support it next year, too. Word of the new feature comes from Verizon CFO Fran Shammo, who mentioned it at a conference this morning — but not before taking the opportunity to take a not-so-subtle jab at T-Mobile for rushing to play up their support for it.
