Bear 71, the interactive documentary created by the NFB and Jam3, has won the FWAs Site of the Year award for 2012. The documentary is accessible at http://bear71.nfb.ca.
To compete against the hundreds of sites that are submitted to the FWA each year and come out number one is the greatest achievements we could ask for. Says Jam3 creative director Pablo Vio.
In addition to the FWA Site of the Year award, Bear 71 has also received Gold awards at both the One Show Gold and Cannes Lions. The FWA announcement can be read here http://www.thefwa.com/article/fwa-site-of-the-year-2012.
Bear 71 is an emotionally engaging multimedia documentary that tells the story of a female grizzly bear who is tagged and monitored constantly for over 10 years. The websites 20-minute narrative captivates the viewers attention by utilizing footage of Bear 71s life collected from 2001-2009, music by Radiohead, and incorporating the viewers own webcam and microphone into the experience.
When you first arrive at the site it states, This is a 20 minute documentary. Most people dont expect to be staying through its entirety but the experience is so unassuming you get sucked into the narrative and stay till the end, Vio explains. It is astounding to us that the site was able to elicit intense emotion; many viewers admitted to getting watery eyed at the final scene of the documentary.
Bear 71s constant life on camera is a project about wildlife conservation as it is about exploring the interconnected manner in which the modern world operates, and its impact on all creatures. In the words of the bear, sometimes its hard to say where the wired world ends and the wild one begins. Experience the Bear 71 documentary at http://bear71.nfb.ca/.
