Kinetica Is A New System That Lets You Play With Data With Your Fingers

Using a proof-of-concept called Kinetica, Ph.D. students at CMUs Human-Computer Interaction Institute have created a system that lets you slide certain subsets of data out of a chart, order data along arbitrary lines, and even create charts and graphs with a quick swipe. The app, which runs on the iPad, allows the user to import a data set and then slide across it to separate out, say, outliers or specific values. Read More >>

Microsoft Says Windows Will Be Free On Phones, Small Tablets

Microsoft Corp said on Wednesday it would give away its Windows operating system to makers of smartphones and small tablets, as it seeks to grab a toehold in those fast-growing markets. Microsoft's move, announced at its annual developers conference in San Francisco, is an attempt to broaden the user base of mobile versions of Windows, in the hope that more customers will end up using Microsoft's cloud-based services such as Skype and Office. It comes a week after new Chief Executive Satya Nadella unveiled new versions of Word, PowerPoint and Excel applications for Apple Inc's iPad.

Microsoft Finds Surprising New Ways To Undermine Windows Hardware

It seems increasingly likely that Microsoft Office will be announced for the iPad within days . This could be a substantial blow for Windows tablet manufacturers as the move would remove one of the few reasons to purchase a portable device powered by Microsoft operating system. Curiously, the move is coming only weeks after the unveiling of Nokia X model range — smartphones that are powered by Googles Android operating system . One of the biggest threats to Microsoft is that consumers may begin to embrace more compact, cheaper alternatives to Microsoft Word and Powerpoint as time spent on tablets grows and time spent on PCs shrinks.

Barnes & Noble, Microsoft Revise Nook Partnership

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have agreed to revise their digital-reading partnership, allowing the bookseller to stop developing its Nook e-reading app for computing devices powered by Microsoft software. Barnes & Noble said it would stop work on apps for Windows 8 computers, phones and tablets, and support a possible Microsoft-created digital-reading service or app. That service, which Microsoft hasnt announced, was mentioned in a regulatory filing Thursday as “the Microsoft Consumer Reader.” Since the deal was struck, circumstances for each company have changed.
