Apple Takes High Road in China Smartphone Standoff With Xiaomi

Apple is steering clear of Chinese rival Xiaomi's low-price online strategy, ramping up store openings in China to harness its premium edge and fend off the fast-growing No.3 global smartphone maker. The U.S. firm's quarterly results smashed Wall Street expectations with record iPhone sales in the holiday season and a 70 percent rise in China, powering the company to the largest profit in corporate history. Apple Sells Record 74.5 Million iPhones in Quarter

Apple posted a far better-than-expected 29.5 percent jump in quarterly revenue, driven by record sales of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus smartphones in the holiday shopping season. The company sold 74.5 million iPhones in its first quarter ended Dec. 27. Revenue rose to $74.6 billion from $57.6 billion a year earlier. According to Thomson Reuters, analysts on average had expected revenue of $67.69 billion.

It's nearly time for Samsung to unveil the next iteration of its flagship smartphone. Coming off a shaky 2014 , the South Korean company has some work ahead of it to prove it's still the king of smartphones. This year's three day Mobile World Congress event starts on 2 March, so it wouldn't be surprising to see an announcement around that time.

LG Launches the G Flex2, Doubles Down on the Curved Smartphone

LG Electronics revealed what had become an open secret at CES by Monday morning: It's launching the G Flex2, the second in its line of curiously curved Android smartphones with supposedly scratch-resistant rears. The Korean electronics giant is heavily promoting the device as an extra-tough "self-healing" smartphone, even more so than its predecessor. LG boasts that its own internal chemical processes have taken Gorilla Glass, as used in the first iPhone and just about every smartphone since, and made it significantly tougher. Dr. Ramchan Woo, the company's head of smartphone planning, said, "The probability of the glass cracking is reduced by 30%" compared to the previous G Flex.
