Oct. 17: Photo Phinish

Nickelback holds off a determined Kanye West for third week running

By Frank Moldstad

Nickelback's "Photograph"
The nation's two most popular downloaded singles, Nickelback's "Photograph" and Kanye West's "Gold Digger" have been running neck and neck, but Nickelback once again managed to prevail for the week ending Oct. 10. That makes "Photograph" the Number One tune for the third straight week. But Kanye West's "Gold Digger" is showing long legs after its three-week run as the Number One song -- it has now logged three weeks at Number Two. (See last week's chart .)

The Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps" takes its lumps at Number 3, but the group has got to be happy with how its album "Monkey Business" has produced two Top Five singles, the other one being "Don't Lie."

Ashlee Simpson's "Boyfriend"
Lurking in the Number Four spot is Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends," showing remarkable resiliency considering that September has come and gone, and Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin Down." Both have been around for several months, but no new tunes have yet emerged to smack them into oldie status yet, although Ashlee Simpson, Kelly Clarkson and several others are trying.

The Overall Top 5 Singles chart is compiled from the weekly top singles downloads charts published on iTunes, Connect, Buy.com, Wal-Mart and Napster. The raw data from these sites is poured into our Top Downloads by Site chart below, and the Top 5 are drawn from it based on rank and frequency of appearance. (For the sake of comparison, we also include the week's Top 5 album downloads on emusic.com, which does not publish a singles chart).

Although the Top 5 chart is based on data reported by some of the market's biggest download sites, its rankings do not include data from several other significant sites. However, it's extremely unlikely that a hot tune would not reach the top five singles among the sites we survey, and we believe that our Top 5 chart represents a reasonably accurate picture of total download trends.
