Intel Investing In China Mobile Chipmakers

According to two sources with knowledge of the plan, Intel Corporation is close to announcing an investment in Chinese-government affiliated mobile chipmakers Spreadtrum Communications and RDA Microelectronics--its latest move to catch up in a smartphone chip industry led by Qualcomm Incorporated. One of the sources said the acquisition could be made through Tsinghua Unigroup, a government-affiliated private equity firm controlled by Tsinghua University in Beijing. Struggling to gain traction in the smartphone and tablet market, Intel recently has sought to partner with mobile chipmakers in the hope they could help it regain the market dominance it enjoyed when personal computers reigned. An Intel spokesman declined to comment.

Designer Builds A 3D-Printable “Imura Revolver” In Honor Of Arrested Japanese Maker

When Japanese police arrested Yoshitomo Imura for printing his own revolvers, 3D printing advocates in some circles were up in arms. The guns, which only fired blanks, were simple test models called the Zig-Zag. Now, in honor of Imura’s work in 3D printing, a CAD designer has created a newer, better gun that could be used to fire real bullets. The designer, who calls himself WarFairy, is part of a team of creators called Free Open Source Software & Computer Aided Design. He has begun Tweeting images of the gun, adding it to an already impressive arsenal of models.

BlackBerry Ltd. plans to sell its new square-screen smartphone at a lower price than rival products, as the company attempts to regain some of the ground it has lost in the global market. BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen said in an interview Monday that its Passport smartphone, which will go on sale starting Wednesday, will cost $599 in the U.S. without subsidies.

PayPal Here, the company’s dongle-based mobile payments solution, is now available for Android tablets, the company announced this afternoon – a move that will address a large and growing swath of the tablet market. According to Gartner, PayPal notes, 62 percent of tablets sold last year run Android. The PayPal Here application allows users to accept credit card and debit card payments, as well as mobile payments via PayPal.

New Mexico City Plans To Auction Excavated Vintage Video Games

A city in New Mexico where 1,300 unwanted vintage video games were discovered buried in a landfill has voted to auction off more than half of the cartridges in the run-up to Christmas. Members of the Alamogordo City Council voted 7-0 late on Tuesday to offer some 800 of the Atari games found earlier this year for sale on eBay and the council's own website. The mystery behind who dumped the games in the landfill, and why, inspired the dig and a documentary film by Microsoft Corp's Xbox Entertainment Studios.
