New Golf Strength and Flexibility Tests from Somax Performance Institute

The conventional sit-and-reach flexibility test has nothing to do with golf, says Institute President Bob Prichard. The only times you need this range are to tee up and take the ball out of the cup. The same for the bench and leg press. The only time you need strength in these ranges is picking up a golf bag or pushing a golf cart. These tests have absolutely nothing to do with the golf swing.
Since any increase in hip speed is multiplied 25 times at the club head, and two university research studies have shown that low handicap golfers have much stronger hips than high handicap golfers, Somax has designed three tests every golfer should do at home to assess the strength and flexibility of their hips. It is very simple for anyone these days to take a photo of internal hip rotation with an iPhone or iPad and then use the free app Tap2Measure to measure internal hip rotation on each hip.
Golfers need a minimum of 60 degrees of internal rotation on each hip for an efficient golf swing. An orthopedic study of professional golfers found poor hip flexibility significantly associated with low back pain.
Golfers can use the position for measuring internal hip rotation to have someone test their hip strength. Lying on the stomach with the knees bent 90 degrees and the feet apart with knees together, have someone of similar size and strength hold the feet apart. Golfers with adequate hip strength should be able to snap their feet together with little or no effort. If a golfer has to struggle to bring their feet together, their hips are too weak for golf. This hip weakness is hurting their handicap.
The final strength test is an assessment of trunk strength, which should be less than hip strength. Golfers whose trunk is stronger than their hips will spray the ball off the tee, and be inaccurate with their irons.
