Googles Nexus 7 Takes a Bite out of Apples Market Share, Android App Builders Rejoice

Queensland, Australia (PRWEB) November 16, 2012

Android has had mixed results in its quest for supremacy in the mobile device market. Despite its beginnings in the shadow of Apple, Android has managed to grow in the marketplace, even as once-popular Blackberry has become a quaint artifact, and the first generation of Windows phones was released to almost universal indifference.

With new releases like Samsung Galaxy and an updated version of Kindle Fire, Android has gotten a major boost. Nothing, though, has given Android the strong push that it has received from the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 sold out its first run on the first weekend it was available. It has been so successful that some experts predict that the Nexus 7 and similar Android releases in the pipeline could help Android tablets overtake the iPad by the third quarter of 2013.

The Nexus 7 is priced at $199.99, and delivers a lot of performance for its price. It runs quickly and efficiently. It is thinner and lighter than the Kindle Fire, and has an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor that runs at 1.3 GHz, with 1 GB of RAM. The base model has 8 GB of flash storage, and the 16 GB model costs $50 more.

It has two speakers configured as one, a gyroscope, digital compass, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth, and WiFi. It has a resolution of 1,280 X 800 HD display, which is reportedly more than enough for watching 720p videos or reading text. The Nexus 7 runs for an average of 9 hours and 49 minutes on one charge. It is the first tablet to run on Androids new Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system, and Google Chrome is the default browser.

Most users and reviews cite the Nexus 7 as giving the look, feel, and performance of a much more expensive tablet. According to a review in engadget.com, the Nexus 7 is the best Android Tablet for less than $200. Techweekeurope.com.uk noted that, while Androids transition from smartphone to tablet has been anything but smooth, Google has finally stumbled upon the perfect formula with the Nexus 7.

The Nexus 7 is optimised for Google Play, much like the Kindle Fire is optimised for Amazon. Consequently, it is easy to use for apps from Google Play, including many selections for games, magazines, news, and music.

Craig Aitken, Owner and Director of SmarterApps, is excited for Android app developers: For a while, we were beginning to wonder if Android was going to go the route of Blackberry, but the release of the Nexus 7 could very well turn out to be the turning point in their battle for market share with Apple.

Aitken continued, Google and Asus have put out a very good product at a very nice price point with the Nexus 7. Whenever a product this good is put on the market at this low a price, it always opens the market to more people. Due to the fact that most apps are either free or very inexpensive, we can expect the newer customers, even if they have less disposable income, to download apps at a rate equal to customers in higher income brackets.

Aitken concluded, This time, Android has mounted a very serious challenge to Apples domination of the market. Basically, its a great time to be an Android app developer.
