NBC's Chris Clackum reports. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12507/7345064?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WMGT what it comes to buying a car there's now statistical evidence that most buyers are doing a lot to lower monthly payment like longer term loans last quarter more people signed up for 72 month loans then they did for 60 month loans but Matt Jones of car buying advisor at Edmunds says what buyers aren't doing is being realistic about the actual cost of car ownership forgetting the other cost to come along with car ownership like you know gasoline or insurance or maintenance all of which he says can double even triple the true cost and easily exceed Edmonds recommendation of spending no more than 15% of monthly take-home pay to own and operate a car and we actually like to advise people to spend that 15% to try to cover the whole of their car purchased not just their payment payments that John says are already averaging over $500 a month for a new car cost that don't include gas insurance and maintenance Chris clackum NBC News
